Poems

God's Little Boy

Oh, little boy, from a far away land,
Right from the start from the Father's hand,
He fashioned your frame in ways so grand,
And loves you in ways you don't understand.

And though we've yet to hold your tiny frame,
You've captured our hearts & we long to call your name.
We thank God for you, a gift so sweet and pure,
And pray for you, to know His Son for sure.

And as you grow, may you always know
The Lord is there wherever you go.
We promise to love you thro' all your days and hours,
But never forget, His love is far greater than ours.

Our Father's Son, He freely gave
And all who believe, He surely will save.
Oh, little boy, we're all adopted at so great a price,
But as God's little boy, you're adopted twice.

Paul W. Smith

I Would Gather Children

Some would gather money
along the path of life.
Some would gather roses and
rest from worldly strife.

But I would gather children
from among the thorns of sin.
I would seek a little child with
a big and toothless grin.

For money cannot enter in
the land of endless day,
And roses that are gathered
soon wilt along the way.

But oh, the laughing children
as I cross the sunset sea,
And the gates swing wide to Heaven.
I can take them in with me!

Daydreaming

I stepped into his room today
Knowing he’s not there
This waiting for referral
Is more than one can bear

But taking in the moment
I sit down on the floor
And dream of him here with me
When waiting is no more.

A little giggle fills the air
As I rub his feet
I place my hand upon his heart
To feel its every beat.

A song is sung so very soft
His eyes begin to close
He’s meeting me in dream land
A place where love still grows.

My vision now is very blurred
The tears stream down my cheeks
I’ve dreamed of him quite often
Throughout these past few weeks.

Suddenly a sound is heard
The phone rings in the hall
Waking up I quickly pray
Please let it be “The Call”.

A Red Thread To China

A red thread to China was cast today
From us to a child so far away.
This thread symbolizes an attachment of hearts
That distance alone can't keep us apart.

Her mother and I are caught in a chase
That time alone will bring us to face
This loving young child we want so much to greet
With love in our hearts before we did meet.

This tiny, thin thread may stretch, tangle or fray
But our love for her grows stronger each day.
Through the test of time it won't break or sever
She'll be part of us forever and ever.

With oceans between us, the distance is spanned
By a love that is greater than man could have planned.
For God in His mercy loved her and us
And decided our family would be a great plus.

So for now we'll just love her and pray every day
That God keeps her and loves her for us till we may
Travel to China, that land of great past,
To the side of our daughter, to hold her at last.

A Moment in Time

You take a child from a far away land
You take a mother with a photo in hand
You put them together in a special way
It's a moment in time-called Gotcha Day.

Some children cry out, others just stare
They don't comprehend what's happening there
But God in His love and mercy proclaims
It's time for these babies to have some new names.

A name with a face, your child now embraced
The heart ache of waiting is quickly erased
That half empty feeling is filled to the brim
The love that's expressed spills over the rim.

If you've been in that room and seen the display
Of love flowing out in this marvelous way
You'll never forget for the rest of your years
The gallons and gallons of joyous spent tears.

This moment won't end, a family now starts
The love just keeps coming direct from the hearts
Of mothers whose dreams have now become true
A great moment in time, its love's grand debut.

The Gift of Life

I didn't give you the gift of life,
But in my heart I know
The love I feel is deep and real,
As if it had been so.
For us to have each other
Is like a dream come true!

No, I didn't give you
The gift of life,
Life gave me the gift of you.

Hand Picked

I know that a mother's excited
When she sees her baby new
And her feelings overwhelm her,
As the waiting days are through.

I had just as much excitement,
As I waited patiently,
For the telephone call that would
Change it all,
When you'd start your life with me.

I have never been disappointed
With how you came to be.
For you were specially chosen by God
To be in our family.

Our Family Tree

We've added to our family tree
A stronger one to make,
A child from another plant has
Become our new namesake.

Just as a limb is grafted from one tree onto another,
It alters and improves the plant
Making it unique and like no other.

Our family tree has been improved,
Adoption made this so.

For love, much more than bloodlines,
Is what makes us thrive and grow.
We chose to share our life and love and all the joys to come.

Our "family tree" has blossomed
With the arrival of our cherished one.

Legacy of an Adopted Child

Once there were two women
Who never knew each other.

One you do not remember,
The other you call mother.

Two different lives shaped to make you one.
One became your guiding star,
The other became your sun.

The first one gave you life
And the second taught you to live it.

The first gave you a need for love,
The second was there to give it.

One gave you a nationality,
The other gave you a name.

One gave you a talent,
The other gave you aim.

One gave you emotions,
The other calmed your fears.

One saw your first sweet smile,
The other dried your tears.

One sought for you a home
That she could not provide,
The other prayed for a child
And her hope was not denied.

And now you ask me through your tears,
The age-old question unanswered
Through the years…
Heredity or environment…
Which are you a product of?

Neither, my darling. Neither.
Just two different kinds of love.

Adoption

With anxious hearts and open arms,
We sought you everywhere.

You are, dear child, are a gift from God.
The answer to our prayer.

No matter whether birth or choice,
A home is blessed from above,
When caring parents claim their child,
A family is formed by love.

Waiting and Waiting

I will wait on the Lord
Before I speak
Perfect wisdom I will seek
And I will wait
As long as it takes
I will wait on the Lord
